  • On the election of the 9th Bishop of East Carolina

A sermon on Luke 21:5-19 given November 16, 2025 As many of you will have heard by now, we elected a new bishop yesterday. God willing, on May 23rd, 2026, The Rev’d Sarah Fisher will be consecrated as the 9th Bishop of the Diocese of East Carolina. And as many of you will have heard, no doubt, she is also a… (wait for it) human being . I know. Imagine: A human being. As a bishop. [gasp]. Though the funny the thing about human beings, especially lately—is that we’re remarkably good at forgetting that other human beings are, in fact, human beings, too. Wendell Berry writes about this in his book The Need to Be Whole . He says: “ A great many people now seem to have abandoned any willing membership in the great category of ‘all humans,’… Instead, they have withdrawn into subcategories composed of people like themselves.” [...]

  • New Realm Privacy Settings

Important Realm Information – Update Privacy Settings by November 30 What is “Realm”? Realm is the online church hub we’ve been using since 2015. Realm has helped us nurture relationships, organize ministries, and manage the administrative aspects of church life. Whether you’re joining a small group, checking your pledge, or updating your new cell number, Realm makes it easy to stay engaged in the life of our faith community. Among its many uses, it is of primary importance as an up-to-date directory of our Church. How does it work? Our staff creates profiles for everyone at St. Paul’s, but you get to personalize and maintain it. If you do not know how to access your profile, contact the church office and we will get you set up. Who’s in Realm? You are! Every member of our parish has a unique profile—a digital extension of your place in our beloved community. [...]

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." -Mark 12:30 Dear St. Paul’s family, As we kick off the Annual Commitment Campaign for 2026, I want you to consider going “all in” with us. Bear with me here: In offering the greatest commandment, Jesus gathers up the entirety of our lives into a single, undivided love for God. That sounds like an impossible personal standard-total focus, total devotion, all the time—one most of us know we don’t meet on our best days. But Jesus is quoting the “Shema”, Israel’s daily prayer, which forms a people to love God together. The “all” here is not only about individual effort but the shared wholeness of [...]

  • “Make Church Medieval Again”

Note: This article first appeared in the November 2025 version of This Month at St. Paul’s. Click here to read it. During our 2025 vestry retreat, the Rev’d Matt Babcock challenged us to “Make Church Medieval Again.” He had in mind the role parish churches played in Medieval England. Certainly, they functioned as houses of worship, but they were also the place where social connections were cemented, community identity formed, and a sense of place was established. Churches were at the center of community life—physically, economically, and socially. Fr. Matt was making the case for restoring that sense of the centrality of the Church in making connections and being a center of community life. While we cannot reorient all of Greenville to have St. Paul’s as its center, we can help foster community in the places that we live. Chances are you live within walking distance of other St. Paul’s [...]

  • Better to Light a Candle

Note: This article first appeared in the August 2025 edition of This Month at St. Paul’s. Click here to read the full newsletter. Some wisdom becomes so woven into our common life that it almost seems ancient. One such saying, long cherished in churches and service organizations—and most often attributed to St. Christopher—is this: “It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” It’s an image I find myself returning to often, especially when the needs of the world feel endless and our efforts seem so small by comparison. There are days when darkness—hunger, injustice, division—seems to stretch farther than our reckoning. And yet, hope calls us to respond not with resignation or anger, but by kindling whatever light we can. That’s the spirit behind our Rise Against Hunger event coming up on Sunday, August 24 at 2:30 p.m. This will be our fifth packing event with [...]
